Now is the perfect time to plant shrubs, trees and other perennials. They’ll have a little time to get settled in before they go dormant for the winter and they’ll be ready for spring the second it arrives. Find a local nursery and they’ll work with you. Locally earned nurseries rely on repeat business and will do everything they can to make you happy.

Remember to plan ahead. If your planting a tree that will end up very large, don’t plant shrubs nearby that need sun. Make sure to ask lots of questions about how big things will get and how much sun and water they will need.

Fall and winter are great times to plant shrubs. It’s also the time to plant bulbs for next spring.

Check out your local nurseries and garden centers. They can give you expert advice that you won’t generally find at the big box stores on what grows well in your area of the Midwest. You’ll also find lot’s of end of season bargains.

Now is the time to plant your bulbs for a beautiful spring garden. You can plant tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, etc. for some nice early color next spring. When planting bulbs be sure to put a little bone meal in the hole with the bulb — it’s a great fertilizer.

If you want some color now you can go with mums and “icicle” pansies. The pansies are amazing and will go through the winter and into the spring.
