How do I keep gnats from my face when gardening?
November 12th, 2009 | by Michael |lindabouma asked:
I wear a ballcap but that doesn’t really help. Is there a spray or homeopathic solution to get these pesky insects away from me when I am outside working in the grass and garden? I live in the mountains. They arrive in late spring and don’t leave until early October. It makes it almost impossible to stay outdoors. Our township does not have community spray for the area.

Use one of those hats with a net or use the bug spray known as “OFF”

There’s an insect repellent spray on the market.

Try spraying the area, with Listerine mouthwash (the gold ki, nd only). It repels most insects like mosquitos and gnats…and won’t be toxic to you, your pets or plants

I see your not a true fisherman.
Check your local sporting good store for a hat net.
It covers your head and your neck, and saves a lot of
“aggravation.”

I would like to say what a bummer that your township does not spray. Back in the 70’s it use to be like this. Then they government started spraying for Gnats. I know what your going through. I do remember them coming around and asking for a donation to cover the cost of the spray. Would that be possible in your township? That a few of you can get together and if the township agrees. Go door to door or farm house to farm house and ask for a donation to have pesky .someone spray for these critters.
Gee gnats are so bad that one would almost have to wear swimming goggles to work in the yard. Since swimming goggles fit tight against your eyes. Gee might be worth a try when your working in the yard. Try the swimming goggle thing if you have work to do.

I really like Burt’s Bees Herbal Insect Repellant. It does not last as long as a spray containing DEET (primarily for mosquitoes), but it has a nice citrus smell, is not irritating, and leaves no greasy feel. I pour a tiny amount in my palm, rub my hands together, then rub my face, ears, neck and hair. If I have on short sleeves, I repeat for my arms. Please avoid a community spray — this could have awful effects on “good” insects and birds and fish.
